The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has announced a call for applications for its 2011 Science and Service Awards, a national program that honors organizations that have successfully implemented evidence-based mental health and substance abuse interventions. Awards are given in five categories including prevention, treatment, recovery support services, co-occurring disorders, and promotion of mental health. The deadline for applications is May 13, 2011. Last year, the Center for Applied Behavioral Health Policy, in partnership with Old Pueblo Community Services, received the Science and Service Award for Treatment of Substance Abuse and Recovery Support Services. The 5-year CSC Project provided housing and state of the art treatment for almost 600 homeless ex-offenders; significantly increased employment, income and housing stability; reduced drug and alcohol abuse, and criminal recidivism. For more information on the Science and Service Awards and application process, read the SAMHSA Bulletin or visit their website at www.samhsa.gov/scienceandservice.
