Applying Victimology in an American Indian/Alaska Native Context: A Discussion of Sexual and Domestic Violence in Indian Country

During my presentation I will provide an overview of victimology in cases of domestic violence and sexual assault that occur in Indian Country. In particular, I will discuss the impact of Federal Indian laws and policies had on the structure of criminal jurisdiction and how these laws and policies limit the scope of "justice" in Indian Country. Also, I will discuss the importance of Tribal victim services as a mechanism of "justice," which gives a different perspective for victims and others impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault to process their trauma.
